What is an Ice Dam?
Ice dams occur when snow builds up on the roof and heat from the attic causes it to melt. The melting snow travels down the roof slope, toward the edges (eaves) and refreezes due to the colder temperatures along the eaves. A ridge of ice begins to form on the eaves which prevents the melting snow from draining off the roof, creating an ice dam.
Damage to Your Home
Ice dams can cause significant damage to your home. They can tear off your gutters, loosen the shingles and prevent additional melt from draining off the roof. When the water behind the dam isn't able to drain properly, it can start to leak into your home damaging your ceilings, walls, insulation and other areas. If moisture issues are left unaddressed, it can lead to mold developing in your home.
